Evening Guardian

This is a beautiful guardian print, and the baby is asleep so the angel’s attention is drawn to the girl who appears to be darning a sock, something children today would probably never do. She is also holding a paper, and I would love to know what would be written there.

Is it a list of things, she, herself was assigned to do or is she checking off the girl’s chores. Perhaps, she was told to watch the baby and darn, either a sock or stocking, and as she leans over to check on the little sister or brother, she is blissfully unaware of the angel.

It states in Hebrews 13:2, that we often entertain angels unaware, in the form of strangers or guests, but we often do so as well in our day to day lives. I would imagine that we pass dozens our even hundreds every day, and if were were in a crowd, innumerable.

Thank you, Lord for your angels and protection. I hope you are enjoying these slices of Victorian life, but be sure, angels are still present, in the company of His Holy Spirit. His peace, Rebecca Jones

Calming the Child

Another one I have no artist for, many of these are old postcards, sometimes, they are hard to track down. I love this one because instead of a bridge or ledge it is a boat. Remember, how many times Jesus was in a boat. He also calmed the wind and waves during the storm, ” Peace, be still. ”

We are His children and He can calm the storms of our lives. He would most certainly tell us to be still, like in Psalm 46:10 or Exodus 14:14, to be still and He will fight for us. I have read the phrase that at times, He calms the storm and then again the storm rages and He calms the child.

Are you in place like that today. I know I have been. That’s when I have to choose to be still so the Prince of Peace can infuse in me the peace He left me in John 14:27. The same peace that stills the storms, calms the crashing waves and keeps our hearts from trouble.

Calm The Child

Lord, you calmed the sea, Peace be still.

I know your heart is tender and mild.

Even if the storms arise, they never prevail.

Your Spirit is my sail, you’ve looked at me and smiled.

How can I be in fear, with your love so very near,

For you are calming the child.

One Last Bridge

I decided to use one last bridge and share my Pinterest guardian angel board as well, even though we may highlight some others from it. There are many bridges and many other guardian angels to get to. The Hebrew word for bridge is geshur, like it sounds. It is from a rarely used word meaning ” to join. ”

You will surely forget your trouble, recalling it only as waters gone by. Job 11:16

What a wonderful verse, hence the phrase about the past, water under the bridge. Here are a few other examples. Isaiah 35:8 speaks of a highway to be called the Way of Holiness, though it is more of a road the implication is to join the holy back to God and the fools can’t go. Kind of like the straight and narrow.

For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,…..1 Timothy 2:5, also implies a bridge to heaven and earth in the form of Christ. His birth, death and resurrection, put mankind back in good standing with the Father, as long as they accept Him as Lord. His constant intercession is bridging our prayer life and daily walk with Him.

The verse in Luke 16:26, gives a different illustratration of paradise and hell in the story of Lazarus. And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. ” No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there. ”

Obviously there was a gaping separation between the so called bosom of Abraham and hell where the rich man ended up, while he could see Lazarus, the beggar, he could not cross to paradise. And would it not be even more torment to be able to see paradise and not go there?

Jesus took the people from paradise with Him, so now it is just hell, and they probably can still see into heaven. But as for heaven, it would not be heaven to see people in torment. God really is good and He longs to bridge gaps in our lives.

We should take a moment to think that over. If nothing separates us from the love of God, and it doesn’t unless we choose to separate ourselves or someone chooses to separated from us, literally or in some other way. Why not pray about it and ask God how to bridge the gap or is it time to let go.

Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction? Amos 3:3

And if you don’t know Him as Lord, please accept His love today and you’ll be assured of going to heaven, you may not always have time to cross that bridge when we come to it. His peace, Rebecca Jones.

A Simpler Bridge

5b541d60a3a2c9db64d58ec4a9219f71

How beautiful is this guardian watching over a toddler venturing out onto a bridge to retrieve her ball. It appears to be another R. Kratki postcard. An artist I have not been able to locate information on. Bridges, as we have discussed were a common theme in that era as many people had to cross them in rural areas, not only in the South, where these were popular but in towns and villages across Europe as well. It is a smaller and more stable bridge but the little girl is safe in the care of her guardian angel.

Thankfully, He sends angels ahead of us and since God is not bound by time, He can be there in the presence of His Spirit, angels are always with Him. So they can be not only ahead of us, but behind and beside as well. All verses today from the Good News Bible.

I will send an angel ahead of you to protect you as you travel and to bring you to the place which I have prepared. Exodus 23:20

The LORD guides us in the way we should go and protects those who please Him. Psalm 37:23

You may make your plans, but God directs your actions. Proverbs 16:9

The Guardian Angel

14bcc3316a4da4f452c729717bf92c15

This print is a common representation of a guardian angel. She watches over the boy and girl to see them safely across the bridge. While many postcards of the day depicted angels, printing one with a bridge, sort of broke the mold for the printer which is Lindberg, not the artist, I do remember reading there was company in Poland, although Heilige Schutzengel is German for Holy Guardian, or Guardian Angel.  These old postcards don’t have a signature, though someone named Lieber did similar work according to one source, I could not verify an artist.

The postcards have became popular lithographs and hung in nurseries and homes even today and make wonderful gifts. From 1900 or up to 1909, the were postcards and the prints and became popular in the south, all through Appalachia.

The familiar southernism, ” If the Good Lord’s willing and the creek don’t rise. ” even has a tie to it. The original saying was that someone would see you, ” If the Good Lord was willing and the Creek Indians did not uprise. ” It changes with the time to refer to the creek beneath the bridge.

The reason being that so many people lived in rural areas and near footbridges, that took them to town or school, even church. Many times the bridges were unsafe, missing a board or two, could be flooded or muddied, rickety at best, even just a foot log. I`even have an ancestor who fell off one. Guardian angels were a necessity then and now, in fact, all through history.

It was not only the South but many places that travel was sketchy and dangerous, all across Europe and the southwest United States as well, unless you went by stage or train, it was a carriage or buckboard, horseback or on foot, that was the mode of transportation. Towns, villages and hamlets were quaint little places and a footbridge, a familiar site.

Over the next few days we will look at some more examples of these guardian angels, but the angel on the bridge is a common theme and varies. And there are several others that were probably even predating this one, it may or may not have been the first bridge, but it was this print we see so often that was the one that took off in popularity among worshipers in the south and would hang in churches and Sunday Schools, and even homes across America and abroad, and they still do. While we may not have bridges to cross, there is a spiritual implication, and we definitely need them on freeways, bridges and over passes. His peace, Rebecca Jones / public domain

Welcome To My New Blog!

699f52781f4c954e16c884bf46274e1b

I hope you will enjoy my newest blog, On  Angel’s Wings. Angels have always been an interest of mine. When I was just seventeen, I taught Sunday School at a very small church in Atlanta.

There were very few people my own age, I taught sweet, little, old ladies. One of them was named Nannie, and she gave me a book about angels by Billy Graham. Since then I have read dozens, some brilliant testimonies of divine intervention and some that were in total error about the roles of angels.

From time to time we may do studies about them but I wanted to fill the board with beautiful artwork, even museum quality, and some just for such things as card making and scrapbooking. I will also include some poetry.

We may even do some fun things on the blog, the whole idea is to bless and glorify His name and give an insight to the going ons in the spiritual realm. Angels are not just cherubs, little baby like creatures with wings, but are mighty and do the Lord’s work.

They are busy in the spiritual warfare that takes place in our lives. We live in a time that we need His protection even more as believers, and we want to pray for Him to charge them on behalf of believers everywhere.

Let’s start out with a month of guardian angels, lovely vintage artwork from the Victorian Era. All of this work should be considered public domain, so you can Pin it, print it, or use it on you blog. If I  am not sure, I will tell you. Some artists, I may or may not know. Feel free to look them or fill me in. But remember all poetry and any writing is my property, and copyrighted. Most of it I share freely as long as you leave my name. So let’s enjoy some guardian angels.

And then move one from pleasant ones watching children into more dramatic representations, and then to some beautiful ones for Mother’s Day. As always, I appreciate the comments and interest in my blogs and I hope to be a blessing.

And in case you are interested, here’s a link to my 2017 Writer’s Challenge, a whole month of angel posts, to get you going in the direction of guardian angels. It will help you get interested in the watchers, because God is watching over His Word.
