Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
(Matthew 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-42)

Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed Him. When He came to the place, He told them, “Pray that you will not enter into temptation.”

And He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, where He knelt down and prayed, “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me. Yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him. And in His anguish, He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.

When Jesus rose from prayer and returned to the disciples, He found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. “Why are you sleeping?” He asked. “Get up and pray so that you will not enter into temptation.” Luke 22:39-46

It dates to 1524 and is at Apsley House in London.

Such a pain reminder of His sacrifice. It is in His face.

Say A Prayer

fc3c9784

Here’s a little angel,

Reminding you to say a prayer.

Whenever you need an angel,

There will always be one there.

To guard and guide you,

And under a wing to hide you.

So say a prayer, forget the daily care,

And God will hear your heart’s prayer.

Call on Him each and everyday,

His loves washes troubles away.

His heart holds you in His love,

And the Holy Spirit with the wings of a dove.

Angel of Annunciation

Angel of Annunciation French School, XIX century

Isn’t this a regal and glorious painting. I love the costume and there is an elegant and refined quality about. What is the angel about to announce? It could be Gabriel, but no double God has many angels who can speak His word into people’s lives. I hope you like this one.

Window Angel

This is another guardian angel from the turn of the 19th century. Even though it is signed I have not been able to identify the artist from the signature, R. Kratki. Not even in the list of postcard artists I found.

Still, it is a beautiful display of God’s love and protection, a little different in the fact the child is in danger of falling out the window. How blessed that the guardian is right there, it is always important to pray for children, and our families. Rebecca Jones

He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wing shall you take refuge. Psalm 91:4

Musical Angel

I found this vision of loveliness, and it is listed as being painted in 1828, by Friedrich Wilhelm Von Schadow, the name Mignon appears there but I am not sure if that actually is the title.

The seated angel has a lyre or guitar of some sort, her dark hair and reddish golden wings are lit against the backdrop of night. she looks as if she may be waiting for someone to serenade or perhaps she is settling a child into sleep.

This is a beautiful example or romanticism style or art, and here is a link to the artwork of Wilhelm von Schadow. Rebecca Jones

Murillo Angel

Another of our powerful guardian angel paintings. thi one is leading a timid child apparently from darkness to light. One can wonder as to any symbolism intended by the artist or is the angel simply pointing to the goodness of our Father.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was a Spanish baroque painter born in 1617, until his death in 1682, he was an avid painter with over 400 to his credit, including works in a Seville convent.

Bartolomé Estebán Murillo’s were so in demand the king refused to allow their export from the country. Murillo himself never left Spain, which I think was unjust, and a shame for the art world. He had lived with  his uncle after his parents died.

A young Murillo sold devotional pictures to sell at Seville fairs. He painted religious pictures and used local peasants before finally founding the Seville Academy, having spent time in Madrid and studying the art of Rubens and Van Dyck, he softened his work and brought Rococo in even decades before it was considered an art form.

His school lasted a century and a half and even today a good painting in Spain is known as a Murillo, and the Getty Museum’s article on him says he taught pupils and breathed the same gentle spirit on them, isn’t that a beautiful quote.

Zona Angel

This painting by Antonio Zona, from 1854 is phenomenal, the child looks almost like a Raphael cherub but the angel is a powerfully presented figure who appears to either be guiding the child or protect him before the cross.

Antonia Zona was an Italian artist, an NeoClassical painter, he did portraits, even one of himself. I am including a link to read his biography, and I believe this is a better representation of guardian angels, though I like the sweet ones too. Rebecca Jones

La Jeune Fille A L’ange

Ever feel lost and alone? As a believer we are never alone, because of Jesus and we have been accepted into the beloved, He is as as near as a prayer, and is the Holy Spirit in us and we are surrounded by angels and a a cloud of witnesses.

While the are those in heaven I do not believe we are to try to talk to them or that they know the bad things going, on, it is just that Christians are always near or in His presence, they can choose to step away from His calling but are never alone. The kingdom of heaven is in us.

May angels surround you with His peace and the music of His love.

Eternal Companion

To everyone of us at birth,

An angel is assigned.

For God is always thinking of His children,

We are always on His mind.

As we grow, our will is free to choose,

And should His grace we follow,

Faithfully, with a repentant heart.

We have nothing to lose.

We follow our Lord throughout life,

His footprints, our shoes.

But should we not accept,

Eternal life and saving grace.

The angel steps aside,

Folded wings in place.

Still his charge,

To guide toward salvation.

Prayers and petitions,

From others, to draw near.

The guardian angel will hear.

And should you by conviction,

Accept Jesus as Savior,

He will stay and find grace and favor.

So please never walk away,

From the love of God,

Offered by sacrificing His Son,

Salvation, today is the day.

And keep your guardian angel,

A gift of God, forever friend.

Eternal companion, time no more.

No need to keep it, so it will never end.

Angels given by God,

Given at birth,

Eternal companion ,

Heaven and earth.

His peace,

Rebecca Jones
